Lace is delicate by nature: fine threads, open patterns, often a little stretch. A few simple habits keep it soft, keep its shape and make your favorite pieces last much longer.
Hand wash whenever you can
- Fill a basin with cool or lukewarm water and a small amount of mild detergent (one made for delicates is ideal).
- Turn the piece inside out and let it soak for a few minutes.
- Gently press the water through the fabric. Do not rub or scrub the lace.
- Rinse in clean cool water until no soap remains.
If you use the washing machine
- Close every hook and clasp so it cannot catch on the lace.
- Place each piece in a mesh laundry bag.
- Choose the delicate cycle, cold water, low spin.
- Wash with similar colors and soft fabrics only: no jeans, zips or towels.
Drying: the step that matters most
- Never wring or twist lace. Roll it in a clean towel and press to remove water.
- Lay it flat or hang it by the center, away from direct sun and heat.
- Skip the tumble dryer: heat weakens elastic and can shrink or warp delicate fabrics.
Store it with care
- Keep lace pieces flat or loosely folded in a drawer, not crushed under heavier clothes.
- Store molded cups nested together so they keep their shape.
- Separate pieces with hooks or embellishments from the most delicate lace.
Quick answers
Can I use fabric softener? It is best to avoid it: it can leave residue on fine fabrics and reduce stretch.
What about bleach? Never. Bleach damages lace and elastic, even in white pieces.
How often should I wash lingerie? Underwear after every wear. Bras and bodysuits after a few wears, with time to rest between wears.
